How To Guides

Drawing a Floor Plan

There are apps out there such as RoomScan that can help you to measure rooms and create floor plans. If however you don’t have access to one you can follow this handy guide to drawing your own floor plan:

Step 1: Get some A4 (or larger) white paper, a pencil and a measuring device. It may be a good idea to ask someone to help you if you’re using a tape measure!

Step 2: Draw a rough outline of your room on a piece of paper. You can use a ruler to help you here, but freehand is fine. It doesn’t have to be a work of art!

Step 3: Measure each wall, noting down the dimensions on your room outline as you go. Envy usually works in mm, but you can measure using whatever unit you feel most comfortable with and we can work out the conversion for you later.

Step 4: Now note down the location of all doors and windows in the room, including the width of each. Please also add a measurement either side of each door or window so it is clear where they are positioned in relation to the wall. Don’t worry about measuring heights at this stage (unless you feel confident in doing so).

Step 5: Upload your floor plan. You can do this by taking a photo of your drawing, scanning it, or even by uploading straight from a computer programme or app (if you used one).

Taking Photos of Your Room

Here are some of our top tips for taking photos for your online interior designer:

  • Make sure you have enough light so the images are clear
  • Take photos of every wall
  • Make sure images include the locations of sockets
  • Include any items you intend to keep and have incorporated in the design
  • Don’t forget the ceiling!
  • You can upload up to 10 photos of your room via the Envy website. Remember, the more information we have the better the final result!
